Purpose of the Course:

In line with the training requirements imposed in respect of the Protection Of Personal Information Act no 4 of 2013, this course aims to assist and train professionals and inform South Africans on their rights and responsibilities in terms of protecting personal information., This course aims to provide clarity on the requirements in terms of:

1. The type of personal information that may be processed and shared,
2. How personal information may be processed and shared,
3. Who may receive personal information and whether it may be shared,
4. Reasons why personal information may be processed or shared.

This course includes:

1. The rights and responsibilities imposed on professionals summarised in 6 short lessons,
2. 4 assessments to test your knowledge,
3. A final summative assessment to prove your competence.

There are no entry-level requirements.

Target Audience:

The course will be beneficial for individuals involved in the processing and handling of client personal information.

Course Completion Requirements

To successfully complete this course, you will be required to study the information provided in various pages, and successfully pass 5 assessments.

Upon completion of the course, you will be able to download your certificate of completion.

Course Content:

Chapter 1: Introduction to POPIA

In this chapter, we introduce you to the Protection Of Personal Information Act no 4 of 2013. We look at the intended application and scope of the act. We clarify to whom POPIA applies, what is regarded as personal information and what is meant by the term “processing” of personal information.

Chapter 2: Rights and responsibilities

Understand the rights of the Data Subject as the responsibilities of the Responsible Party.

We consider the 6 responsibilities imposed by POPIA including, accountability, processing limitations, purpose specifications, information quality, openness, safeguards and Data Subject participation.

Chapter 3: Processing special personal information

Learn about the restrictions and limitations when processing special personal information.

Chapter 4: Offences, fines and penalties

Be aware of the offences, fines and penalties imposed for illegal processing of personal information. We also look at the role of the Information Officer and Information Regulator.
